WordPress + WooCommerce Plugin

You have a choice to either use Woocommerce or checkout some of our other options. Woocommerce is essentially a free plugin on top of wordpress but it’s a powerful one with a lot of additional “addons” to expand functionality so you can build whatever custom build ecommerce website you want on top of wordpress, nothing really off limit.

The main upside to using WordPress to power your ecommerce business is the amount of customisation you can do YOURSELF. There’re other choices available that are even more customisable than WordPress, but only developers can access that level of customisation so if you want to be in control of your ecommerce changes not a developer then this is a good choice.

Only issue with using WooCommerce and WordPress is the need for continuous improvements to optimise speed and back end efficiency in order to scale and keep running things smoothly and provide an overall better experience as your business grows.

In simple terms, as you build bigger stores, with a lot of customisations, things start to slow down and lag, which is fine, but you need to invest in speeding things up if you’d like to keep enjoying all the features you keep adding and efficiency in your continuous overall expansion as a business, so that’s pretty much the main downside.

This build tend to be a little cheaper with more to show for it once V1 is completed compared to some of the other tools in a short period of time. Also, from a tools investment point of view you won’t have a lot of subscriptions to pay for all the time, only a couple that are one off at the beginning because both Woocommerce and WordPress are free and any new cost will mostly be the addons which you don’t need unless you’re looking to build something a little bit more specific to your use case.

Shopify

Shopify is a mainstream ecommerce platform that allows you to build your store online and start selling pretty quickly. As Shopify isn’t a generic website builder, it’s geared toward ecommerce and optimising the shopping experience for your customers. Only downsides are the level of customisations available and reliance on third party tools with their own individual subscriptions to add some basic functionalities which tend to be necessary if you’re not just starting out and is gearing to becoming a medium sized business or a large one.

The great thing about Shopify is that it’s scalable and 100% reliable. As Shopify tends to host your entire website on its servers and optimises its code to run shops, it provides solutions that you can rely on at all levels.

We recommend Shopify for most of our customers as it’s scalable and you don’t need to worry about your store nearly as often, but if you’d like to be invested in your online presence and can dedicate some time into growing a solid website you can experiment with both Shopify and WordPress.

Shopify’s reporting suite provides a level of insight that isn’t native to WordPress and has to be added on top, so with Shopify you tend to know more about your customers and can understand their needs better.

Shopify can be a little bit harder to customise for certain things and if required it tends to be more expensive to do than WordPress, including adding SEO customisations such as canonical tags, which can be essential for optimal SEO performance
